Lipids
Fats
The term lipid (greek λίπος lípos „fat“) is a collective name for a broad group of water-insoluble (hydrophobic) organic substances. As lipids play a central role as structural components of all cell membranes, life on our planet would be impossible without them. Energy storage (glycerolipids/ triglycerides) and signal transduction (e.g. sterol lipids) are further biological functions that are of special interest in sports.
Even though fat is vitally important, a chronically increased intake can have devasting consequences for our body. The demand of approximately 60g per day, is usually exceeded in western industrial societies by 70g. This corresponds to an excess of 651kcal every day!
