Cholesterol belongs to the group of lipids. Its name originates from the Greek and means translated "solid bile". This description goes back to the 18th century, where cholesterol was already identified in gallstones.
On the one side cholesterol is a vital component in our nutrition, that is required, amongst other things, to synthesize hormones (e.g. testosterone, estradiol), on the other, an iincreased cholesterol levels is a arteriosclerosis risk factor.
